Partnering

A leading San Diego-based population genomics company Helix has partnered with San Diego County to make COVID-19 testing accessible across the county to those that need it most. The public-private partnership is providing the county with up to 2,000 COVID-19 tests per day.

“We’re incredibly proud to partner with San Diego County to expand access to COVID-19 testing at a time of unprecedented need,” said Helix President and CEO Marc Stapley.

The county is using the Helix COVID-19 Test, which is a broader real-time RT-PCR end-to-end test intended for the qualitative detection of nucleic acid from the SARS-CoV-2. It is available nationally.

“Communities across the country have been struggling to provide access to fast and reliable COVID-19 testing,” said Greg Cox, chairman of the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. “Through this strategic partnership with Helix, we’ve made a major step forward in meeting the need for COVID-19 testing here in San Diego.”

Founded in 2015, the 100-employee company has a next day turnaround for samples tested at its San Diego lab.

The ALS Association Greater San Diego will present its 2020 ALS Fiesta, the chapter’s annual fundraiser as a virtual event. Planned for Wednesday, Aug. 12, it will run from 7 to 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Proceeds from the event benefit the chapter’s services provided to local families living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

An online auction and mystery box shopping will be available and held during the Fiesta Week, from Aug. 10-14. A fund-the-mission “paddle raise” will be available on Aug. 12.

Supporters can also purchase $205 Fiesta VIP packages, which will include refreshments and gifts. The package includes complimentary home delivery prior to Aug. 12 and is priced to honor the 205 families living with ALS currently registered with the chapter.

“Because of COVID-19 guidelines for large crowd events, we decided to go virtual,” said Steve Becvar, executive director of the chapter. “The safety and well-being of our patient’s families and caregivers will always be our first priority.” In the past, the dinner typically attracts 250 people and raises more than $100,000.
