Financial Services Firms Unify SoCal Operations

Financial services firm CBIZ MHM LLC and CPA firm Mayer Hoffman McCann PC on Jan. 20 said they were restructuring their Southern California operations, combining seven officers into a single business unit, run from San Diego.

Paul Nation, a senior managing director at CBIZ, will lead the SoCal unit, which includes the firms’ San Diego, Los Angeles, Irvine, Bakersfield, Oxnard, Temecula and Encino offices. Mayer Hoffman and CBIZ are independent entities but work together in an alternative practice structure.

The SoCal group will have 221 employees, the largest single business unit in the firms’ financial services division.

Nation previously led the firms’ San Diego and Irvine offices. Mark Luttrell oversaw the other five offices, and said he was ceding management responsibility in favor of growing CBIZ’s litigation practice, which provides consulting and expert witness services for law firms.

Nation said the restructuring would help bring the San Diego and Irvine’s technology and life sciences expertise to the LA market, and similarly share LA’s real estate knowledge base with other offices.

“We want to leverage those special areas across locations,” Nation said.

Cleveland-based CBIZ and Kansas City-based Mayer Hoffman recently acquired local tax firm Millimaki Eggert LLP, folding its 12 employees into CBIZ’s San Diego office. Combined, CBIZ and Mayer Hoffman say they are the ninth largest accounting provider in the country.
