EY Volunteers Plant Seeds of Hope in Conservation Garden

EY (formerly Ernst & Young) gave all of its 300 accountants and other professionals in San Diego the day off recently to volunteer and give back to the community as part of its annual “EY Connect Day.” Among the projects locally was planting drought-tolerant grasses for the Water Conservation Garden in San Diego. Nationwide, EY estimates that more than 11,000 professionals volunteer for the EY Connect Day.

DEI Holdings Inc., a local consumer electronics company, recently held its fifth annual Charitable Foundation Gala and golf tournament, where it announced that its charitable foundation, Forte for Children, has raised more than $2.5 million in grants since its founding. Established to ensure disadvantaged children in the community have access to music programs and music therapy, the foundation also received $483,000 in immediate grants on the evening of the gala.

Two organizations, Roads of Success and Life Without Limbs hosted The Seeds of Hope Gala recently celebrating their partnership in a teenage mentorship program and a San Diego countywide anti-bullying campaign in San Diego schools. Nick Vujicic, who was born without limbs, is the president and founder of Life Without Limbs and was the keynote speaker at the Gala. Jacqueline Issac, local attorney and partner at San Diego-based Stephens & Issac launched the 2014 refugee mentorship program that pairs refugee children with a San Diego government leader.

The Mission Valley YMCA held an event at the San Diego Air and Space Museum and themed it “The Spirit of San Diego: A Roaring 20’s Gala to Benefit Mission Valley YMCA.” The event netted nearly $300,000 and hosted 500 guests. All proceeds benefit physical education, literacy, gang/drug prevention, and autism programming. Major sponsors included Professional Maintenance Systems, Jack in the Box Foundation and Cymer Inc.

San Diego-based DJO Global was named corporate honoree for this year’s Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis by the Arthritis Foundation’s San Diego office. DJO Global’s support of the Arthritis Foundation demonstrates its commitment to the San Diego community to raise funds to help find a cure for arthritis, the nation’s leading cause of disability. The Home of Guiding Hands, an El Cajon-based nonprofit that provides services, training and advocacy for people with developmental disabilities, reports it raised about $50,000 at its recent 32nd annual Golf Classic Pro-am Tournament. The event featured 135 players and was held at the Sycuan Resort. The tournament’s presenting sponsor was the Bill and Norma Verbeck Foundation. Other sponsors included Kerr Family Foundation, the Carlson family, Sycuan Casino, Hanken Cono Assad & Co. Inc., Quick Dry Flood Services, Torrey Pines Bank, Al and Elaine Barrack, Chris and Karen Hinman, San Diego County Credit Union, California Bank & Trust, Hueppchen Family Foundation, Paradise Valley Credit Union, Jack and Lynda Coppes, Bob and Vicki Dempsey, Marrokal Design & Remodeling, The Arc of San Diego, John Hine Mazda, St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center and the Shea Family.

The Living Coast Discovery Center, a nonprofit zoo and aquarium on San Diego Bay in Chula Vista, announced that its 2014 Farm to Bay Food & Wine Classic event held recently netted $85,000, making it the largest fundraiser in the center’s 27-year history.

Oceanside Yacht Club presented a check for $26,000 to The Elizabeth Hospice, from proceeds raised at its seventh annual Charity Regatta. Since 2002, the OYC has raised more than $200,000 for The Elizabeth Hospice, the region’s oldest and largest nonprofit hospice provider, which cares for more than 500 adults and children living with a serious or life limiting illness each day throughout San Diego and the Inland Empire.
