Join Bank in Show of Support and Gratitude to Our Veterans

“Express Your Thanks”, a campaign sponsored by Bank of America to raise $250,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project, was launched on Sept. 11 and will continue until Veterans Day. The campaign asks consumers, employees and others to make gestures of gratitude that will each generate a $1 donation from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation. The centerpiece of the campaign is a website that will collect images and messages of thanks to service members and veterans. “We are always looking to build on our 90-year history of support for the military, through philanthropic endeavors, recruitment and hiring practices, or specialized banking services,” said Jeff Cathey, senior military affairs executive at Bank of America … The Escondido Education Foundation donated $105,000 to the Escondido Union School District to sponsor some of the 118 classrooms that participate in the award-winning iRead program which uses iPods and technical training to transform teaching and learning in grades K-5 … Mama’s Kitchen’s 17th Annual Wine Tasting even presented by Revivals was held at Bourbon Street in University Heights. The event raised $26,000 to support the daily operations of Mama’s Kitchen to prepare and deliver three meals a day to men, women, and children affected by AIDS/HIV or cancer. Sponsors included Fifty Seven Degrees, Gay & Lesbian Fund for San Diego of The San Diego Foundation, and Sorrento Valley Chiropractic … Ace Parking donated $15,000 to the San Diego Police Foundation to fund specialized patrol bicycles for the Special Events Unit of the SDPD. Keith Jones, principal, Ace Parking and A. G. Spanos, CEO, San Diego Chargers and the San Diego Police Foundation, presented the check to police Chief William Lansdowne at a news conference held at Qualcomm Stadium … In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Union Bank has partnered with KPBS to recognize two members of the Latino community as local heroes. The 2012 Local Heroes campaign is designed to celebrate and pay tribute to extraordinary members of the community who are making a difference by improving their workplaces, neighborhoods, region and the world. The honorees are Michael A.V. Cruz, the former director of the Navy Primary Standards Laboratory at North Island and the Naval Air System Command’s (NAVAIR) chief meteorologist and Danny Gutierrez, an area coordinator for Project Safe Way, a community and volunteer-driven initiative that focuses on improving the safety and well-being of children living in Southeastern San Diego’s Diamond District. The Freedom Station “A home for Heroes” is the leader in providing temporary lodging facilities, as well as educational and career guidance to injured and disabled military heroes who are medically retired or discharged … San Diego Symphony is presenting its season opening gala Opus 2012 on Oct. 6. Van Cleef & Arpels is sponsoring the cocktail reception and post-concert soiree … The Thomas Ackerman Foundation awarded $20,000 in grants to Barrio Logan College Institute and the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. The $10,000 grant to BLCI will support academic tutoring and college readiness programs for students who are traditionally underrepresented in college. The arts and culture grant will support a collaborative project among the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, the Museum of Photographic Arts, and the San Diego Natural History Museum to integrate visual and fine arts with science to create STEAM education (science, technology, education, arts, and math).
