United Way Gives $550K to Agencies Offering Food, Shelter, Basic Services

United Way of San Diego County made a funding opportunity available on a one-time basis to nine agencies that are providing basic services, including food and shelter. Due to increased demand, Alliance for African Assistance, Community Resource Center, Home Start, Interfaith Community Services and The Salvation Army were among those receiving $550,000. “This funding will help health and human service organizations increase their capacity to serve those individuals and families at risk for first-time homelessness,” said United Way of San Diego County President and CEO Doug Sawyer St. Vincent de Paul Village received a three-year grant of $150,000 from California Wellness Foundation to support Toussaint Academy of the Arts & Sciences. Another grant in the amount of $35,000 came from Sempra Energy Foundation to be used for basic services of providing meals and shelter, and the Samuel I. & John Henry Fox Foundation donated $3,500 to assist homeless children At its 34th annual meeting, The San Diego Foundation said $60 million had been granted out to worthy charities during its previous fiscal year. The grants were made possible due to the commitment of the foundation and the many partners who contributed to the community through funds housed at the organization such as the Padres Foundation Fund and The Orca Fund The Kenneth L. and Eileen T. Norris Foundation donated $30,000 to United Through Reading to support the United Through Reading Military Program, which offers deployed military personnel an opportunity to be recorded on DVD reading storybooks to their children at home. The Norris Foundation supports programs that advance better health and intellectual enlightenment Edge Development founders Dayne Wagoner and Steve Prophet presented a $100,000 check to Cal State San Marcos President Karen Haynes on July 30. The funds will be used for operating costs for the university’s new Temecula campus at the Paul Goldring Garrett Institute for Higher Learning during its first year of operation Sempra Energy Foundation awarded the San Diego Futures Foundation a $5,000 grant to provide free e-waste recycling for San Diego businesses and residents. “Sempra Energy’s support of SDFF’s e-waste recycling and salvage efforts benefits the entire San Diego community,” said Ken Harth, president of the SDFF board of directors Irving Hughes is the title sponsor for The New Children’s Museum’s annual fundraising gala set for Aug. 22 at the museum. The money raised will support a new installation, “Animal Art,” slated for completion this fall. The theme of the gala is superheroes, and the event will honor real-life superheroes The University of Phoenix San Diego Campus is accepting donations of school supplies at its local learning centers to help students through its “Tools for Schools” campaign from now through Aug. 28. Donations will be distributed to the Monarch School in San Diego as well as at schools where student teachers of the University of Phoenix prepare to earn teaching certification Corporate Directors Forum plans to honor six of San Diego’s top directors at its annual Director of the Year awards ceremony Sept. 29 at Hyatt Regency La Jolla. James M. Sweeney is receiving the Lifetime Achievement in Corporate Governance award. All of the honorees are being recognized for their outstanding performance in the boardroom and behind the scenes Arc of San Diego received a CVS Caremark Community Grant for $1,500 to benefit the Camp-A-Little program, a summer resident camp for children with developmental disabilities Ten young philanthropists participated in the Jewish Community Foundation’s third annual Youth Philanthropy Camp, allocating $12,500 to nonprofits throughout the community. The money was contributed by camp participants and matched by JCF donors. Among those receiving grants were the Anti-Defamation League, A Reason to Survive and Helen Woodward Animal Center Promises2Kids held a concert featuring singer Jewel on July 20 at the home of Joan Waitt. Sponsors included San Diego Magazine, Redfearn & Associates, Manpower and Ace Parking. The funds raised will support the Developmental Screening Program at the Polinsky Center and the preschool at Polinsky.
