Enth Degree Acquires Con Surfboards

San Diego-based Enth Degree Inc. said Sept. 12 that it acquired Santa Monica-based Con Surfboards. Financial terms of the private purchase were not disclosed.

Enth Degree is a holding company for local real estate assets, as well as for Con.

Michael Donovan, the 39-year-old president of Enth Degree, says he is particularly excited to work with master shaper Bruce Grant, who will continue leading surfboard design and production under the brand name Con Surfboards.

“Grant is a true artist when it comes to shaping. You don’t buy a Con board if you’re a beginner. These are high-end products, custom made for people that truly surf all the time,” Donovan said.

Con boards retail between $1,500 and $3,000 and are all built-to-order based on the surfer’s size, weight, surfing form and what types of breaks he or she frequents.

Donovan says the company produces an estimated 500 custom-built boards per year, roughly 40 per month.

Constantine Colburn founded Con Surfboards in 1959 and was responsible for patenting and commercially producing the first surf leash, the strap connecting a board to the surfer’s ankle. Today’s leash remains essentially unchanged from Colburn’s original design.

In addition to gaining the rights to Con’s surfboard designs, the deal included all intellectual property rights to original advertisements, art and history spanning more than 50 years.

“It really is a unique opportunity to own such a respected brand. We are in talks with several companies about licensing the Con brand to create new retail opportunities like clothing lines in the near future,” said Donovan.
