19 Awards

The San Diego Business Journal editorial staff received a total of 19 awards at the San Diego Press Club’s 48th Annual Excellence in Journalism Awards last week.

More than 500 awards in 130 categories and 10 divisions were announced at the annual event. All awards won were in the non-daily division.

Natallie Rocha won the best non-daily newspaper entry for her story “A Paradigm Shift in Tech.” This story also won first place in the science/technology/biotech category.

Ray Huard won first place, architecture and design for his story “Balboa Park’s New Mingei Museum to Be Unveiled This Summer.” He also won second place honors in the same category for “Historic Oceanside Building Becomes Boutique Hotel.”

Brad Graves won first place honors in the business and financial category for his story: “Taylor Puts Future in Hands of Its Employees.” Natallie Rocha won second place in this category for her story “Electric Bikes are Flying off the Shelves.”

Ray Huard won first place honors in the feature – serious subject category for “Architectural Firm Envisions New Neighborhoods.”

Natallie Rocha also won second place in the food category for her story “Wake Up, Make Ramen, Repeat: Takashi Endo Goes to Great Lengths to Make Fresh Ramen at Menya Ultra.” Mariel Concepcion also won third place in this same category for her story “Black Owned Winery Has Rich Heritage.”

Natallie Rocha won second place in the gardening category for her story “Growing Strawberries and a Family Business with Each Generation.”

Ray Huard won first place honors in the multicultural category with his story “He went from Parking Cars to Owning a Law Firm.” He also won third place in the same category for “Yi Chao’s Journey Started with a $500 Loan.”

Ray Huard also won first place honors in the profile category with “Man Behind Otay Ranch Built First San Diego Project in 1973.”

Ray Huard again won first place honors in the real estate category with “Chula Vista Project Aims to Become High-Tech Research Hub.” He also won third place in the same category with “Mission Valley’s Civita Park Honors Site’s Mining History.”

Brad Graves won second place in the science/technology/biotech category with “Road Test for Achates Power” and an honorable mention for his story “Video for Big-Rig Trucks Attracts Funding and Customers.”

Mariel Concepcion won second place honors in the travel – international category with “Cruises May Resume as Early as Fall.” She also won second place honors in the travel domestic category with “Fourth of July to Have Huge Economic Impact” and third place honors with “San Diego Air Travel is Up.”
