Mitchell Division Acquires Disability Services Company

Mitchell International, a San Diego company that makes software for car insurance claims, built out its disability services division with a new acquisition on Jan. 3.

The company acquired Excel Managed Care & Disability Services, a Sacramento-based provider of occupational and non-occupational medical case management. The companies did not disclose the terms of the deal.

Excel will maintain its brand, and will continue to be led by President Brenda Smith. Excel will operate under Genex Services, a new division of Mitchell. In September, Mitchell acquired the Pennsylvania-based medical cost containment and disability management company.

The deal will add 125 employees to Genex, boosting its headcount to more than 1,600 case managers. Mitchell, for its part, has more than 1,500 employees, including 771 in the San Diego area. The deal will also expand the company’s market presence on the West Coast.

“The acquisition of Excel Managed Care & Disability Services allows both companies to expand the breadth and depth of our services,” Genex CEO Peter Madeja said in a news release. “Both Genex and Excel employees are committed to facilitating the recovery of injured and disabled workers and delivering exceptional claim outcomes by controlling medical costs and disability durations.”

StoneRidge Advisors LLC served as Excel’s advisor for the deal.
