Qualcomm Partners With Facebook on Project to Boost Cities’ Internet Speeds

Social media giant Facebook will use San Diego semiconductor company Qualcomm Inc.’s chipsets to power its effort to improve wireless internet connectivity in dense cities.

Facebook plans to integrate Qualcomm’s 60 GHz technology into its Terragraph project, the “multi-node wireless system” it is developing to provide increased internet speeds in urban environments.

Qualcomm’s tech could help make wireless internet faster and more reliable in areas with large obstacles, such as the massive concrete buildings that make up many cities, the company said.

“Working with leading operators and manufacturers, this terrestrial connectivity system aims to improve the speed, efficiency and quality of internet connectivity around the world at only a fraction of the cost of fiber deployments,” Qualcomm said in a May 21 statement.

Trials are anticipated to begin in mid-2019.
