El Barrio Logan’s historic eatery, El Carrito, has re-opened with an upgraded look and an updated menu. Located on Logan Avenue, the 600-square-foot trolley car-restaurant once transported riders along the same street it sits on dating back to the 1940s.

El Carrito’s new proprietors are Carolina Santana and Milo Lorenzana, who plan to continue the restaurant’s tradition as a gathering place for the neighborhood. Santana and Lorenzana, native San Diegans, also helped launch Salud Tacos, also on Logan Avenue, in 2015, and opened coffee house Por Vida just down the block the same year.

Santana’s parents, Luis and Sandra, are partners in the restaurant, with Sandra contributing her own recipes to the new menu, including huevos rancheros, eggs with pork machaca and five variations of chilaquiles. There are also build-your-own omelettes, pancakes and menudo served with hand-pressed tortillas.
