Report: Union-Tribune May Be Sold to SoCal Billionaire

The San Diego Union-Tribune and its sister newspaper, the Los Angeles Times, may be sold by parent company Tronc Inc. to Los Angeles-area physician and billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong.

That’s according to a Feb. 6 report in the Washington Post.

The Tribune Co., Tronc’s forerunner, acquired the Times in 2000; the Union-Tribune, known as the U-T, in 2015.

Soon-Shiong, an entrepreneur, is a shareholder in Tronc, which is based in Chicago.

Soon-Shiong’s latest biotech startup, the personalized medicine company NantHealth Inc., went public in 2016.
