Truepic, a San Diego startup that verifies the authenticity of photos and videos, acquired a well-known photo forensics company.
Truepic acquired Fourandsix on Dec. 11. The latter was started by photo forensics expert Hany Farid, to create a software that can detect photo manipulation. The technology was licensed to the Defense Advanced Research Project Agency (DARPA) for its media forensics initiative.
Fourandsix, however, is shutting down. Truepic will acquire its intellectual property and software. Farid will also join Truepic’s advisory board as a result of the deal. His expertise in post-capture image analysis will allow Truepic to introduce new computer vision testing methods.
"Hany is a pioneer in the photo forensics field and we are thrilled to bring him on to our board of advisors," Truepic COO Craig Stack said in a news release. "We know that bad actors will continue to spread disinformation and defraud the public with fake or manipulated images. To counter this threat, Truepic must ensure it has the foremost experts on our side, and there is no better individual than Hany to join the team and help us fight back."
