Five San Diego construction firms will vie for $30 million worth of U.S. Navy work under a decision announced by the Pentagon Oct. 23.

Competing for a slice of the pie are Harper Construction Co. Inc., Balfour Beatty Construction LLC, RQ Construction LLC, Solpac Construction Inc. dba Soltek Pacific Construction, and T.B. Penick & Sons Inc. The contractors will now wait for task orders.

The move increases the ceiling amount of five existing contracts from $900 million to $930 million. Work will be performed at Navy and Marine Corps facilities in California and five other Western states.

The Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southwest awarded the original contracts in 2010. The command is based in San Diego.
