Pentagon Is a Big Fan of Northrop’s Jamming

Signal jammers are turning into a healthy business for Northrop Grumman Corp.

As the federal fiscal year was just about to close, the U.S. Navy gave the contractor a follow-on order worth $267.7 million for its JCREW signal-jamming devices. Northrop Grumman (NYSE: NOC) builds the gear in Kearny Mesa. Work will continue through 2022.

The Sept. 28 award followed an initial award on July 31, worth $57.7 million.

The jammers were originally meant to foil roadside bombs triggered by cellphones. That explains the system’s name: JCREW stands for Joint Counter Radio Controlled Improvised Explosive Device Electronic Warfare.

JCREW electronics now have the extra job of disabling small drones, which enemies have put to use carrying and then dropping explosives.

Northrop developed the JCREW system, beginning work with a 2013 contract. The systems offer an open architecture for flexibility and quick updates.

JCREW comes in a “manpack” version, which a soldier or a SEAL can wear like a large backpack. There is also a version built to ride in a vehicle.
