Escondido Petco Store to Be One of First to Debut In-Store Veterinary Hospital

A Petco store in Escondido is one of a dozen stores in which the retailer is planning to debut veterinary hospitals by January, part of a move by the San Diego company to expand its pet services offerings.

The dozen in-store clinics, which plan to offer $10 exams, will be open by January 2018 in eight stores in Texas, three in California and one in Colorado. The stores will be remodeled to feature the new offering, Petco said Oct. 10.

Petco opened its first in-store veterinary hospital this month in Aldine, Texas, operated by Austin-based Thrive Affordable Vet Care.

“By expanding our in-store veterinary services, Petco’s veterinary professionals can help pet parents through every step of their pets’ health and wellness needs, all in one convenient location,” Petco CEO Brad Weston said.

Petco stores already offer on-site vaccination and wellness clinics operated by Vetco. The company also offers digital pet advice through PetCoach, an app and website it acquired this spring.

The Escondido store that will offer vet services in the coming months is at 1000 West Valley Parkway.

Petco operates more than 1,500 Petco and its smaller format Unleashed by Petco stores in the U.S., Mexico and Puerto Rico.
