Daylight Solutions Inc. Acquired By East Coast Defense ContractorFriday, March 10, 2017
Local microscope maker Daylight Solutions Inc. has been acquired by East Coast-based defense contractor Leonardo DRS for $150 million.
Daylight will operate as one of eight Leonardo DRS arms, and will keep its San Diego location along with its current management. All three of the company’s co-founders Dr. Timothy Day, Paul Larson, and Sam Crivello will remain on with Leonardo DRS.
Daylight makes an instrument called a Quantum Cascade Laser (QCL) microscope, which the company named Spero. The laser microscope was developed for researchers and pathologists to observe the chemical makeup of tissue — potentially leading to early detection of cancer. But the company also developed technology for military and defense through its subsidiary Daylight Defense LLC, and had received significant venture capital from defense contractor Northrop Grumman corp. in 2011.
“Daylight has established itself as a market leader in scientific lasers, infrared microscopy, and lasers for aircraft survivability utilizing QCL technology,” Day, chairman and CEO of Daylight, said in a news release. “Together with the added strength of the people and resources of Leonardo DRS, the mission of Daylight Solutions, ‘To Protect with Light,’ will be more fully realized and will enhance our proven ability to transition new technologies into commercial products for a wide range of industries.”
Another local investor may be cashing in on the exit, as San Diego-based Moore Venture Partners also participated in Daylight’s Series C round.
