Amazon Putting Together a San Diego Team for Strategic Initiative

Internet retail giant Amazon recently set up shop in Solana Beach as part of a “mission critical” strategic initiative that would involve a large expansion in the city.

Since late last year, the company has occupied a second-floor space at Solana Beach Corporate Centre, 440 Stevens Ave., said a company manager who declined to provide his name.

That location is temporary: Amazon expects eventually to employ as many as 500 people who would work out of a permanent space as large as 90,000 square feet in Solana Beach, according to someone familiar with the matter who asked not to be identified because the person does not have authorization to speak with news media.

Recently the company advertised a number of job openings in the city, including software development engineer and senior manager positions, some paying more than $150,000 per year. At least some of those jobs relate to AmazonFresh, a grocery delivery service operating in Irvine, London, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle. The service rolled out to some parts of San Diego County in 2014.

“You can enhance and scale our ordering experience, from search and selection through fulfillment orchestration,” reads a listing from Jan. 5. “You can design and implement data structures and algorithms to improve personalization and predictive analytics.” Posted by Amazon Corporate LLC, it identifies the employer as A2Z Development Center Inc., an Amazon subsidiary that last year filed for permission to temporarily hire more than 200 foreign workers statewide under the federal H-1B visa program.

A subsequent post said the company is looking for a senior software development engineer in Solana Beach “to join a highly innovative team that is building brand new, mission critical software for millions of Amazon customers.” It said the job is related to Prime Now, the company’s same-day delivery service.

Amazon has other operations in the county, including a bookstore at the Westfield UTC shopping center.

Amazon did not respond to requests for comment.
