For San Diego’s Startup Week, Imitation Is Sincerest Form of Flattery

San Diego’s grassroots startup event, San Diego Startup Week, has apparently inspired another major city to organize a startup week of its own.

Boston is launching a Startup Week this year from Sept. 18-22, according to a new group organizing its launch.

Lead organizer of Boston’s Startup Week, Stephanie Roulic, said she first encountered the concept in San Diego.

“I was absolutely in awe by how the entire community was coming together to celebrate and encourage one another’s goals, and I knew then that this event needed to come to Boston,” Roulic said. “Our city is so rich with talented individuals and unique ideas; we need to connect them and show them off more — this week will be a platform to do that.”

Startup Week is not a concept unique to San Diego, of course. In Portland, the event is going on its second year, and expects 5,000 attendees this year. In Denver, the event has been going on since 2012, and attracted a record 13,000 attendees in 2016.

San Diego’s Startup Week has been around since about 2012, but its popularity has only recently boomed. The event’s attendance doubled from 1,500 to over 3,000 in 2016, and this year organizers were expecting attendance of 4,000 to 5,000.

San Diego Startup Week has been going on since Monday, June 19, and wraps up June 23.
