Here’s a Change: Qualcomm in the News for New Chip

Qualcomm Inc. unveiled its next flagship processor, the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, on Dec. 6 at a company event in Maui, Hawaii.

The new chip is powerful enough to support artificial intelligence, “cinema-grade” video and virtual reality, Qualcomm said. As usual, Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) designed the chip to consume minimal power, preserving battery life on whatever mobile device it runs.

Connection technologies will include a modem supporting the fourth-generation LTE (Long Term Evolution) data standard — the fastest available now. Devices using the chip will be able to download a 3-gigabyte movie in less than 3 minutes, and users will be able to grab files in the cloud as quickly as those stored in the phone’s memory, Qualcomm said.

The business is providing samples of the chips to third-party manufacturers now.

What will surely follow is a parade of announcements about devices using the Snapdragon 845. The parade might begin as soon as the Las Vegas consumer electronics show early in the New Year. Those devices will not only include smartphones but XR goggles (that stands for extended reality, similar to virtual reality).

The Maui conference also featured announcements about Qualcomm’s top-end processor that’s currently on the market: the Snapdragon 835. It’s at the center of new personal computers from Asus and HP, which both run the Windows operating system (yes, it’s a break from the traditional combination of Windows and Intel). Asus says its machine has a 22-hour battery life. HP boasts its machine will deliver 20 hours of video playback, or 700 hours of standby time.

Separately, Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (that’s AMD) announced that it will pair a Qualcomm LTE modem with its Ryzen processor for mobile devices.

One more note: Qualcomm said that computer buyers can expect the upcoming Snapdragon chip (the 845) to power personal computers someday.
