Ken Song Named President/CEO of Biotech Metacrine Inc.

Metacrine Inc., a new venture launched by biotech bigwigs in San Diego last year, has appointed a new president and chief executive officer: Dr. Ken Song.

Song is replacing Neil McDonnell, who led Metacrine from the company’s inception in 2015 until now. McDonnell has left the company to “pursue other opportunities,” according to a Metacrine spokesperson.

Song was recently co-founder and CEO of Ariosa Diagnostics, a San Jose company that was acquired by global pharmaceutical company Roche in 2015 for $625 million.

“Ken’s proven leadership, track record and broad expertise serving the life science community over the last several years will build on Metacrine’s progress as it continues to advance its therapeutic pipeline and drive to important milestones,” said Richard Heyman, chairman of the board of directors of Metacrine. “We are very excited about the prospects of the company’s evolution under Ken’s leadership as the company progresses toward the clinical advancement of its programs.”

Song has experience in clinical medicine, scientific research, venture capital, and entrepreneurship, according to Metacrine’s news release.

He was co-inventor of Ariosa’s lead product, and led the company to commercialize in over 100 companies. Before Ariosa, Song was a VC at Venrock and a consultant at McKinsey & Company.
