Habitat, Sempra Team Up to Build Veteran A New House

Debra Reed, chairman and CEO of Sempra Energy, presented U.S. veteran Al Lejarde and his wife Kristin with a ceremonial key to their new home, which the company and its employees built through its partnership with San Diego Habitat for Humanity.

More than 850 Sempra Energy employees volunteered to construct the home and the company donated more than $200,000 for construction. Reed said participating in this project is just one small way to say thank you to the Lejarde family and the local community of military personnel and veterans.

The Society for Information Management or SIM San Diego recently announced $20,000 in scholarships. The SIM San Diego scholarships of $5,000 each were awarded to Mitch Simon of Point Loma Nazarene University, Teryl Reed of the University of San Diego, Caylin Hublit of San Diego State University and Edward Psota of California State University, San Marcos. Membership Organization Cubic Corp. awarded Tim Little of Point Loma Nazarene University $5,000.

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad announced that Marylou Flanders is its Volunteer of the Year. Club CEO Brad Holland said Flanders produces its promotional materials, secures auction items and has rallied her employer, Atkins, to be a corporate partner for the club. Atkins is a design, engineering and project management consultancy with offices in San Diego.

Two Men And A Truck San Diego recently announced its Movers for Military collection program to support veterans and their families living in crisis by providing helpful donations. This fall marked the fourth anniversary of the program. This year, the San Diego moving company worked with local schools including Saint Augustine’s High School and University of San Diego as well as various local businesses including Harley Davidson, Vine daycares and KinderCare to collect essential and comfort items. More than 1,700 donations were collected and delivered to Veterans Village of San Diego.

The San Diego Regional Fire Foundation presented $177,000 in grants to 10 San Diego County fire agencies that provide protection and emergency response. Recipients include CAL FIRE, San Diego County Fire Authority, the La Jolla Reservation Fire Department, as well as seven rural fire agencies in the northern and eastern parts of the county. Including these grants, the Fire Foundation has distributed nearly $500,000 to fire departments so far this year. Fire Foundation Chairman Frank Ault said since its inception, the Foundation has granted more than $5 million for firefighting equipment.

Contributions from San Diego Gas & Electric, the San Diego Foundation, Grossmont Healthcare District, Anthem, Southern California Edison and many individuals, including Fire Foundation board members, provided funding for the grants.

The Petco Foundation has committed $1 million in grants to help the San Diego Humane Society save more lives of animals. The grant, to be funded during the next five years, will directly benefit the lifesaving programs offered by the Humane Society and will help maintain the “Getting to Zero,” initiative, which aims to save healthy and treatable pets throughout San Diego County. Susanne Kogut, executive director of the Petco Foundation, said San Diego has been home to Petco for many years and this investment aims to help the Humane Society reach its goal. This grant is Petco Foundation’s third $1 million investment in the San Diego Humane Society and the communities it serves.

San Diego OASIS has received a grant of $20,000 from the Nordson Corporation Foundation to support successful aging initiatives throughout San Diego County. Simona Valanciute, executive director of San Diego OASIS, said this grant will provide a new “Social Corner” concept to offer a casual place for older adults to meet before and after taking classes in a wide variety of disciplines, including exercise, wellness and technology. San Diego OASIS also has an Intergenerational Volunteer program that pairs older adults with San Diego County Title One elementary school children to improve literacy skills and self-esteem.
