Operators of the 174-room Hotel Karlan have completed a $12 million renovation and rebranding of the DoubleTree hotel in San Diego’s Carmel Highland community.

Owner Laurus Corp. has renamed the property Hotel Karlan San Diego – a DoubleTree by Hilton, at 14455 Penasquitos Drive in the city’s Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood.

A Laurus Corp. statement said the hotel’s guest rooms have been remodeled, and it now has new on-site restaurants and an upgraded spa and fitness center. Pool and outdoor cabana areas have also been renovated.

The hotel has also instituted Karlan’s Pups, described as “an extensive pet welcome program,” with several on-site areas where dogs can play. There are also dog-friendly dining options, including hamburger and salmon plates.

Operators said Hotel Karlan now has six distinct meeting spaces totaling more than 14,000 square feet, with a pre-function space and an event lawn for weddings, musical performances and other social events. Dining concepts include the upscale-casual Asado Grill, led by Executive Chef Josh Phillips, and a new gastropub called Black Horse Pub, with craft beers, cocktails and small-bite food items.

The DoubleTree hotel was previously part of a larger resort complex that included the Carmel Highland Golf Course, which was closed by a prior owner in March 2015. Earlier this year, Los Angeles-based Laurus Corp. sold the 114-acre golf course site, next-door to the hotel, for $14.5 million to Manhattan Beach-based 33North Development Group, which is planning a new residential community.
