Qualcomm Licenses Vehicle Charging Technology to UK Company

Qualcomm Inc. said on April 1 that it has signed an agreement to license its wireless electric vehicle charging technology to U.K.-based Ricardo PLC. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Qualcomm’s wireless electric vehicle charging technology goes by the name Halo.

West Sussex-based Ricardo offers auto engineering as part of its wider engineering, strategic and environmental consulting business.

Ricardo plans to commercialize wireless electric vehicle charging systems for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. It plans to develop, manufacture and sell such systems to auto manufacturers. The deal calls for Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) to provide engineering support to Ricardo.

The partners predict that governments and industry will move to electric vehicles in an effort to decrease tailpipe emissions. Qualcomm and Ricardo said that as years pass, demand will grow for higher power, faster charging, various deployment methods such as buried charging pads, and for wireless charging systems which charge SUVs, taxis and autonomous vehicles.
