Viejas Casino & Resort set an Oct. 30 opening for its second hotel building, which will practically double the number of rooms at the resort.

The new, five-story building adds 109 rooms and suites to the resort, bringing the total to 237. The $50 million building project also added a bar, lounge and meeting spaces, including a ballroom capable of holding groups of up to 1,200 people.

Viejas came later than most local casinos to the hotel business, opening its first building full of rooms in March 2013.

Viejas plans to have 2,500 slot machines on its gaming floor at the end of October, up from 2,000 in September of last year. One thousand of the machines are new.

The Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians signed an updated gaming compact with the state of California in August 2014; the compact caps the number of slot machines on the reservation at 4,500.

Viejas Casino also offers table games — including blackjack, baccarat and pai gow — plus bingo and off-track betting.

The hotel, casino and its adjoining outlet center are located on the Viejas reservation on Interstate 8 east of San Diego, near Alpine.

Chris Kelley is general manager of Viejas Casino & Resort.

Robert Welch is tribal chairman of the Viejas band.
