Marketing Agency AdEase Changes Name to Civilian

Community-centric marketing agency AdEase says it has changed its name to Civilian to better reflect the communications specialist’s character and sense of purpose. The change is effective immediately, announced CEO and founder Stacey Nelson Smith.

“This is a case of brand identification catching up to agency identity,” said Smith, who launched the company as a sole proprietorship in 1999 and has overseen its growth to a 35-employee business with more than $20 million in billings and offices or outposts in San Diego, Sacramento and Los Angeles. “We’ve been considering and talking about this for years, and it finally reached an inflection point.”

Originally serving a handful of small retail clients, the business gradually evolved from an agency serving business-to-business and business-to-consumer clients to a cohesive team of creative, strategic professionals working with government agencies, not-for-profits and other organizations to strengthen communities through stronger and more effective communication.

“Increasingly we were partnering with clients dedicated to making meaningful change, and we find it incredibly gratifying and fulfilling,” Smith said. “Our brand identity wasn’t just failing to effectively communicate who we are, it had reached a point where it was actually working against us because what we do now isn’t easy. We are solving large, complex problems that take time and involve a multitude of stakeholders.”

The agency’s work includes state and national suicide-prevention campaigns and a West Coast campaign promoting the responsible disposal of paint.
