County’s Roads Are Rough on Cars, Wallets

TRIP, a national transportation research group in Washington, D.C., releases a report about California’s horrible road conditions, and San Diego is among the counties included in the survey. Deteriorating highways and roads in San Diego are costing motorists $1,886 a year, which is not too bad considering that Los Angeles is in even worse shape. Awful roads there cost drivers there $2,500 a year. Statewide, 34 percent of major urban roads and highways throughout the state are in poor condition, and 25 percent of our bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. TRIP also noted that 57 percent of major roads in San Diego are rated in poor condition, with an additional 28 percent rated in mediocre condition … Biotech investment veteran Jay Lichter, a partner at Avalon Ventures, La Jolla’s very high-profile venture capital firm, is back into bioscience in a big way after nearly abandoning the sector a few years back during the economic crunch. The second time around, the one-time entrepreneur and now investor is doing deals in new companies with the help of the deeper pockets of partner GlaxoSmithKline. A recent example is Avalon’s participation in San Diego-based Sitari Pharmaceuticals with GSK to commercialize treatments for sufferers of celiac disease, an autoimmune disorder involving the improper digestion gluten found in several food grains. Avalon and GSK ponied up $10 million in a Series A round to launch the new company, which was spun out of research at Stanford University. Lichter has even set up an independent business COI Pharmaceuticals to help launch the fledgling companies, and has hired a New York City PR firm to get the word out … Point Loma natural foods grocer Barons Market announces that it will open its sixth location, a 19,000 square-foot store, in Murrieta in Riverside County. This fast-growing chain opened its fifth location in Alpine earlier this month … And what’s happening after hours for us busy business folks? Bach Collegium San Diego, which exclusively performs music from the medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras on period instruments, opens its 12th season Sept. 27-28. The group opens the 2014 – 15 season featuring the music by J.S. Bach’s Leipzig-church Thomaskantor tradition. Go to bachcollegiumsd.org for details and ducats … The local theater scene is abuzz about the world premiere of “Bright Star,” a new musical production from comedian and writer — and now composer — Steve Martin and lyricist Edie Brickell. If it succeeds here, it is destined for the Bright Lights of Broadway, obviously. Tickets are available at theoldglobe.org. … Till next week!
