Qualcomm Inc. sold its Mirasol display factory in Taiwan, and the equipment in it, to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. for $85 million, according to a securities filing.

Seeking Alpha published the information and provided a link to a Taiwan Stock Exchange filing, which put the date of the sale at Nov. 19.

Qualcomm had put hundreds of millions of dollars into the Mirasol factory.

Instead of generating light, Mirasol displays rely on reflected light, and therefore use little power. Mirasol uses micro-electrical mechanical systems technology; such MEMS displays contain thousands of microscopic mirrors, which reflect different wavelengths of light as they move into different positions.

Qualcomm acquired Mirasol technology in 2004 when it acquired Iradigm Display Corp.
