Torrey Pines Again To Host U.S. Open

The United States Golf Association’s Open Championship will return to Torrey Pines Golf Course in 2021 following unanimous approval by the City Council of an agreement to host the week-long event in June.

Under the terms of the contract, the city will lease the renowned city-owned golf course to the USGA “for exclusive and nonexclusive periods of time for the total rental amount of $2.5 million.”

The U.S. Open took place at Torrey Pines in June 2008 in a memorable showdown between Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate, won by Woods in a playoff round held the Monday after the rest of the field was finished. That round was said to have generated one of the largest television audiences in recent history.

The 2008 Open generated a total economic impact to the region of $142 million, including hotel taxes of $1.5 million and local sales taxes of $1.6 million, according to a city staff report.

In addition to both the north and south courses at Torrey Pines, the agreement calls for the USGA to have use of the glider port on the mesa and the parking lot at Qualcomm Stadium. The USGA will also likely lease much of the Lodge at Torrey Pines and the Hilton La Jolla while golf fans should be filling many of the other area hotels.
