General contractor Sundt Construction Inc., which has a regional office in San Diego, has been selected by Southwestern Community College District to manage construction of a new $15.3 million science building in National City.

Sundt officials said the project, taking place at Southwestern’s Higher Education Center, was designed by Johnson Favaro Architects. It includes construction of a new 25,000-square-foot, two-story steel frame facility, with lab space for the community college’s chemistry, biology, microbiology and anatomy programs.

The multiphase project also includes renovations to approximately 10,000 square feet within the Higher Education Center, to provide space for the school’s Small Business Development Center and Contract Opportunities offices.

Sundt is scheduled to begin construction in July 2015, with completion set for early 2017.

Headquartered in Tempe, Ariz., Sundt ranked 62nd among U.S. general contractors based on 2013 revenue, in the annual Top 400 ranking recently published by Engineering News-Record magazine.

The company has also done recent work for University of California, Merced, UC Davis and San Diego International Airport.
