Manufacturing Among Binational Region’s Strengths

A new economic study from the Center for U.S.-Mexican Studies at the University of California, San Diego’s School of International Relations and Pacific Studies, along with the Colegio de la Frontera Norte and the Cali-Baja Mega-Region Initiative, found that the binational region is a hub of manufacturing. The region’s strengths include making audio and video equipment and medical devices and supplies. The area has a gross regional product of more than $200 billion and generates more than 70,000 northbound commercial and vehicular border crossings daily. It has become what the study calls a “vital connecting point for complementary industries in the Pacific region.” … Gridlock. A ranking compiled by Dutch GPS navigation device maker TomTom listed San Diego as the 17th-most congested city in the U.S. in terms of traffic tie-ups. If you commute 30 minutes to work on average, you can expect to encounter 67 hours of delays each year, the report said, which I find hard to believe. No. 1 in the rankings was Los Angeles, which is easy to believe. The Kansas City metro area and Indianapolis were ranked as the least congested cities. … After an absence of 15 years, Father Joe’s Villages and partner St. Vincent de Paul Village have returned to Chula Vista with a new store. … Palomar Health opened North County’s first all-private room, inpatient rehabilitation facility at its downtown Escondido campus. The project included remodeling 25 new patient rooms on the fifth floor, while the current rehab unit on the ninth floor was converted to all-private rooms. The work was funded through a grant from the Palomar Health Foundation. … North Park residents Ryan and Trang Hammond and Daniel Szpak opened Hammond’s Gourmet Ice Cream, which is the neighborhood’s first ice cream-only retail store. … Engineering consulting firm Kleinfelder moved its global headquarters to downtown San Diego from the Golden Triangle area. Recent projects for the 51-year-old firm include the $25 million seismic retrofit and replacement of the historic North Torrey Pines Road Bridge, design of the $70 million North Regional Tertiary Treatment Plant at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, and structural design of the $1 billion Carlsbad Desalination Plant now under construction. … Finally, a team of teen entrepreneurs from La Jolla Country Day School placed third in the country in Junior Achievement’s 2014 U.S. JA Company of the Year competition in the nation’s capital. The team’s business, called Nalu, markets surfboard wax generated from recycled candles.
