Qualcomm bought 2,400 patents from Hewlett-Packard Co., the two companies announced Jan. 23.
The purchase price was not disclosed.
HP (NYSE: HPQ) sold patents related to Palm, iPaq and Bitphone devices.
Qualcomm (Nasdaq: QCOM) already has a formidable patent portfolio covering mobile communications. As of Oct. 31 — long before the sale — Qualcomm reported having more than 38,000 patents.
The just-acquired patent portfolio covers fundamental mobile operating system techniques. Some 1,400 patents and patent applications are from the United States, while 1,000 patents and patent applications are from other countries.
