Bowl Games Pay Off for the Region

San Diego’s two postseason college football games generated an economic impact to the region of $30.8 million last December, up nearly $2 million from the prior year, according to the San Diego Bowl Game Association, which commissioned a study.

The National University Holiday Bowl, between Arizona State and Texas Tech, produced a total economic impact of $23.9 million, with some 25,000 fans coming here from outside the county, said the report done by SDSU’s Center for Hospitality and Tourism Research.

The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, between Northern Illinois and Utah State, had a total economic impact of $6.9 million. Some 8,400 fans traveled here from outside the county for that game.

Together the two bowl games generated an estimated 35,000 hotel room nights, the study said.

Since 1978, the two football games have combined to generate an economic benefit of nearly $700 million, the bowl association said.
