San Diego-based Pfenex Inc. has received a subcontract from Reston, Va.-based defense contractor Leidos Holdings Inc. to develop an anti-malaria agent. The companies did not disclose the amount of the subcontract.

This is the second contract that Pfenex, a privately held company, has received from Leidos (NYSE: LDOS) to develop anti-malarials.

The subcontract is funded with federal funds from Leidos' prime Malaria Vaccine Production and Support Services contract from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Earlier this month, Pfenex received an $8 million extension of its $23.9 million contract with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to develop an anthrax vaccine.
