The North County Transit District has begun a $2 million project to improve the rail line from Mission Bay to the San Diego-Orange county line.

St. Joseph, Mo.-based Transit America Services Inc. received the prime contract. Herzog, also of St. Joseph, is subcontractor.

The contractors plan to replace 9,800 wooden crossties that keep the rail aligned. Maintenance crews will work at night so as not to disrupt train schedules. The district said it expects to finish the work by Nov. 24.
