Adventurous Lawyers Can Be a Pretty Cool Crowd to Run With

Lawyers are people, too — often very cool people. Here’s proof. Jana Beck, a lawyer at Gerson Law Firm APC, completed the 2013 New York Marathon. Beck, with expertise in commercial real estate, qualified to enter the prestigious run by raising $3,500 for the Epilepsy Therapy Project, which her firm also supports. When not running, Beck resides in Point Loma with her husband and two children.

Here’s more. CaseyGerry promoted a former ballet dancer to associate attorney. Nicole Cusack, also a former law clerk, will work closely with partner Robert Francavilla on cases related to head trauma and serious personal injury, also specializing in product liability. In her dancing days, Cusack trained at Cornish College of Arts and danced with the Houston Ballet. And she is a member of Ninety-Nines Inc., an international organization of women pilots. In her spare time, she continues to dance, is a fly-fishing guide, flies single engine aircraft, and enjoys home renovation and cooking. Also at CaseyGerry, Jason Evans, an associate attorney, has been elected to the board of the San Diego County Bar Association’s new lawyer division for a two-year term. This division consists of lawyers who have been in the profession for seven or fewer years, and supports the interests and activities of members through legal outreach, educational programs and community events. Prior to joining CaseyGerry, Evans worked for the San Diego Volunteer Lawyers Program representing victims of domestic and elder abuse, and was a legal assistant for Spach, Capaldi and Waggaman LLP in Newport Beach.

Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP corporate and securities partner Christian Salaman represented San Diego-based Achates Power Inc. in a joint development and licensing agreement with Fairbanks Morse Engine. This is a huge deal in the clean technology space, in which Pillsbury has done great work.

Best Best & Krieger LLP recently hired Holly Cheong as an associate. Prior to joining BB&K, Cheong worked for Snell & Wilmer LLP in Las Vegas as a litigator handing commercial, civil and employment cases. She served as a law clerk to Nevada Supreme Court Justice Kristina Pickering, now Chief Justice Pickering. Before turning to a legal career, Cheong earned a master’s degree in city planning from San Diego State University and worked as an environmental planner for the Southern Nevada Water Authority and as a biologist for the city of San Diego’s planning department. Cheong volunteers as the social media administrator with the San Diego affiliate of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego recently inducted Higgs Fletcher & Mack onto its “Wall of Honor,” which recognizes companies that have contributed more than $25,000 in cash or services. Partner Greg Pyke was a driving force behind establishing the current Ronald McDonald House across from Rady Children’s Hospital. Higgs also selected Ronald McDonald House Charities as one of the organizations to benefit from its “7,500 Hours of Service” campaign launching in 2014 to commemorate Higgs’ 75th anniversary. Members of Higgs will be volunteering at the house, as well as donating money, to meet their goal of providing 7,500 hours of community service during 2014.

Two pieces of news from Sullivan Hill: Candace Carroll, of counsel, has been named to the advisory board for the American Bar Association’s Immigration Justice Project of San Diego. Carroll has more than 30 years of experience handling appeals in the federal, state and bankruptcy appellate courts. Her cases include a wide range of subjects, including contract disputes, insurance and indemnity issues, wrongful termination, intellectual property, personal injury and complex family law matters. Gary Rudolph, a shareholder at Sullivan Hill, has been elected co-chairman of the San Diego County Bar Association’s bankruptcy section. Rudolph has co-chaired the section since 2012 and will continue through the 2014 term. His practice focuses on bankruptcy and other insolvency problems, representing trustees, creditors and debtors in commercial bankruptcies.

Joe Leventhal has been elected ninth circuit vice president by the Federal Bar Association. Leventhal, who founded Leventhal Law to focus on business-minded approaches to complex business and litigation matters, has been a longtime member of the Federal Bar. He serves on its national government relations committee, where he advocates for adequate funding for federal courts and the appointment of additional Article III judges, among other issues affecting federal courts.
