Supporters Take the Steps to Help Provide Hospice Therapy

The LightBridge Hospice Community Foundation, charitable arm of local LightBridge Hospice & Palliative Care, held its fifth annual LightBridge Walk at the Naval Training Center Park in Liberty Station. More than 250 people attended and raised $34,000 to help fund special programs for San Diegans receiving hospice care such as “Simple Gifts,” which grants final wishes, healing touch, pet, music and art therapy. The focus of this year’s 5K was “Honoring our Heroes,” who include patients, loved ones and veterans.

Thirty-four San Diegans who have been suffering with debilitating conditions received free, life-changing medical treatment during the 12th annual Saturday Surgery Day, thanks to a partnership between the San Diego County Medical Society Foundation and Kaiser Permanente. About 150 physicians and staff volunteered to provide surgeries for 14 patients. Additionally, 20 patients received diagnostic gastrointestinal procedures to prevent colorectal cancer. Among those patients, one patient was found to have cancer. To date, Kaiser Permanente has contributed more than $2.25 million in donated services to Project Access San Diego. To qualify for Project Access San Diego’s Saturday Surgery Day, an individual must live in San Diego County, be low-income, be ineligible for public health programs and be referred by a primary-care physician.

The Anthem Blue Cross Foundation renewed its commitment to OASIS’ CATCH Health Habits wellness program in the San Diego area. It recently announced a $98,000 grant for local area charities, including the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego, during a check presentation at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater San Diego Payne Family Branch in National City. CATCH Healthy Habits connects adults age 50 and older with children to encourage healthier eating and physical activity.

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s San Diego-based Pacific South Coast Chapter reports that its recent 31st annual Bike MS Bay to Bay Tour — a cycling fundraiser that drew about 1,800 cyclists — helped raise more than $1.8 million in donations for MS research and programs and services for people affected by MS. Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, unpredictable and disabling disease of the central nervous system with no known cause, cure or prevention. Sponsors for this year’s Bike MS included Hansen Beverage Co., KSWB-TV Fox 5 San Diego and KTLA-TV Channel 5 Los Angeles.

Home Start is expanding its maternity shelter program with the opening of its second maternity shelter location. The recently acquired Normal Heights property has been completely renovated, in partnership with HomeAid San Diego, to house five young mothers, ages 18 to 24, and their children. HomeAid San Diego coordinated nearly $40,000 of direct and in-kind donations to help complete the project, including contributions from Pacific Shores Development, which served as the general contractor for the project; Pardee Homes; Acculine Survey; Ingersoll Rand/Schlage; Owens Corning; CBRE Inc.; Brickman Group; Howard’s Rug Co.; General Electric; KTU+A; OJ Insulation; Behr Paint; and Williams Wood Flooring.
