National University has named Michael R. Cunningham president, effective July 1.

Cunningham joins National University from San Diego State, where he has been dean of the College of Business Administration since June 2011.

He replaces interim President Patricia Potter, who is retiring.

“Dr. Cunningham’s distinguished list of achievements and accomplishments in both academics and as an entrepreneur have resulted in him being ideally suited for the role of president of National University,” said Jerry C. Lee, chancellor of the La Jolla-based National University System.

Cunningham received his Ph.D. and master’s degrees from New York University. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He ran Cunningham Graphics International, a Nasdaq-traded business which operated out of seven countries and employed approximately 2,000 people.

National University counts 23,000 full-time students and 129,000 alumni.
