General Dynamics Nassco Delivers USNS Montford Point to U.S. Navy

General Dynamics Nassco, the San Diego-based shipbuilder, said it delivered the USNS Montford Point, the first in a new class of ship called a Mobile Landing Platform to the U.S. Navy.

Construction of the ship began in May 2011 using a design-build approach to improve the ship’s readiness for production, Nassco said.

The 785-foot long auxiliary ship will serve as a floating base for amphibious operations and operate as a transfer point between large ships and small landing craft.

Fred Harris, Nassco’s president, said the design-build approach in building the Montford Point resulted in the vessel being delivered under budget and on schedule.

Nassco is currently building the second ship in the MLP class scheduled for undocking in September and delivery by the first quarter of 2014. Construction began in February, the company said.
