The U.S. Navy recently announced that it had accepted delivery of its first Mobile Landing Platform ship from San Diego shipbuilder General Dynamics Nassco.
The USNS Montford Point is a 785-foot ship with a long, low middle section, designed to function as a pier at sea and to support beach landings. Among other things, the Navy said, it will be able to help transfer light and heavy vehicles from sea to shore.
Nassco plans to deliver three of the ships for $1.3 billion.
The Naval Sea Systems Command said the Montford Point will go to Portland, Ore., for the installation of specialized equipment.
