Peregrine Semiconductor Microchips Launched into Space on Satellites

Tuesday, March 26, 2013

Peregrine Semiconductor Corp. said recently that it has microchips aboard six Globalstar Inc. communications satellites that were launched Feb. 6.

The satellites were put together by Thales Alenia Space in France, and sent into low-Earth orbit on a Russian space vehicle launched from Kazakhstan. Globalstar, based in Louisiana, provides mobile satellite voice and data services.

Peregrine supplied radio frequency integrated circuits for the satellites — specifically phase locked loop frequency synthesizer and prescaler devices. Peregrine said the components enable communication in 16 C-band and S-band transponders in the system.

Peregrine said its chips hold up well to space-based radiation.

The company’s products use a synthetic sapphire substrate.

Peregrine’s stock symbol is PSMI. Shares trade on Nasdaq.
