San Diego-based genetic analysis company Sequenom Inc. has launched a new cystic fibrosis screening test.

The Heredi-T Cystic Fibrosis test analyzes 136 genetic mutations and five variants that are relevant in causing the hereditary disease — about six times the number of mutations currently available in other screening tests.

“The Heredi-T test provides significant new clinical value, offering highly reliable information about a patient's risk of being a cystic fibrosis carrier,” Bill Welch, president and chief operating officer of Sequenom, said, in a statement.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends cystic fibrosis carrier screening for all patients.
