San Diego County car and light-truck sales rose 9.5 percent from a year ago in the first five months of 2013, according to data released by the trade group New Car Dealers Association San Diego County.

There were a total of 54,660 new-vehicle registrations in the January-to-May period, compared with 49,906 in the same period of 2012.

The local region’s car sales rose 8.6 percent from a year ago, topping the national increase of 5.5 percent. Light-truck sales were up 11.1 percent, compared with the national rise of 12.2 percent.

Based on figures from automotive data provider Polk, the association said the local region’s top five brands by market share year-to-date were Toyota, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Chevrolet.
