A new ship-building contract between General Dynamics Nassco and Penn.-based American Petroleum Tankers Parent LLC will add up to 800 San Diego jobs, the companies announced Friday.

Four 50,000-deadweight ton oil tankers will be designed and built, with construction beginning in the third quarter of 2014. The contract also includes options to build four additional ships.

In addition to the 800 new jobs at Nassco during construction, the shipbuilding will add more than 165 seagoing union jobs to operate the vessels, the companies said.

The ships will be designed by a subsidiary of Busan, South Korea-based Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering.

Nassco and APT built five other ships together between 2007 and 2010.
