Wal-Mart Opens Second Local Neighborhood Market Store

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. has opened its first small-format Walmart Neighborhood Market in the city of San Diego, at 2121 Imperial Avenue.

The Sherman Heights store is the retailer’s second Neighborhood Market location in San Diego County, following an opening last fall on Grossmont Boulevard in La Mesa.

A statement from the retailer said the new 42,000-square-foot San Diego store employs 65 and includes a full-service pharmacy. It also has departments selling fresh produce, baked goods, prepared foods and organic items, with a selection of health and beauty supplies and other non-food items.

Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores operates 23 stores in San Diego County, including 11 general merchandise stores, nine supercenters, two Neighborhood Market locations and one Sam’s Club. It plans to open a full-size Wal-Mart and a Neighborhood Market store this fall in Escondido.

The retailer has also announced plans for another Neighborhood Market in Oceanside, set to open during the first half of 2014.
