Local Coaster train travelers will soon be able to purchase paperless tickets on their smartphones, via a new mobile app available for free downloads on Android devices starting July 15.

The release of an iPhone version will follow soon afterward, according to a statement from the Oceanside-based North County Transit District, which oversees regional train and bus services.

Officials said the North County district is among the first transit agencies in California to offer a mobile ticketing application.

Transit district Chief Financial Officer Ryan Bailey said users will also have access to train schedules and real-time arrival information. Passengers will be able to purchase paperless tickets for same-day travel and advance purchases, using credit and debit cards.

Once on board Coaster trains, code enforcement officers will scan the barcodes embedded on each ticket. More information is at GoNCTD.com/mobileapp.

The application is also currently available for download through the Android app store and will be available in the iPhone app store after its release for that platform.
