Survival Will Be On the Itinerary At New Resort

Del Mar businessman Robert Vicino has been the focus of national media coverage of late for a very unusual project. The news stories detail his purchase of a former military storage facility in Atchison, Kansas, which he and a partner are transforming into a survivor complex where as many as 5,000 people can ride out a nuclear war or deadly virus pandemic in their RVs. Vicino tells media outlets that his Vivos Survival Shelter and Resort, actually a labyrinth of limestone caves, “will be a fun place for members to take vacations and learn assorted survival skills to prepare them for whatever world-changing catastrophe awaits.” Vicino says his specialty real estate business, selling space in community survivor shelters around the globe, has signed 1,000 customers so far, with more than 100,000 requesting more detailed information … Sharp Memorial Hospital ranks No. 55 at $3.45 billion on a list of the nation’s 100 highest grossing hospitals, according to influential industry trade pub Becker’s Hospital Review. The rankings are based on data supplied by Medicare, and based on gross revenues … Popular bicycle apparel maker Zoic relocates to Carlsbad from San Diego. The company tells an industry trade pub that the new digs have twice the space of the old, which will allow executives to set up a larger showroom as well as increase warehouse space … The San Diego USO opens a greatly expanded 10,000-square-foot hospitality center at Lindbergh Field. The center will provide comfort to the more than 125,000 service personnel passing through the airport annually … The San Diego Inventors Forum announces the first place winner of its annual best invention competition. Adrian Pelkus wins $1,000 for his chronic wound treatment system, which uses oxygen infused with a vapor. The inventor claims that his system heals such wounds as diabetic foot ulcers and bedsores in weeks instead of years … Move over Shamu One! Southwest Airlines and SeaWorld, which operates parks in San Antonio, Texas, and Orlando, Florida, as well as San Diego, unveil Penguin One, a Boeing 737-700 decorated with those funny little Antarctic birds. The newly decorated passenger plane marks the 25th anniversary of a marketing partnership between the two tourist-oriented businesses. The carrier is the largest serving San Diego … Finally. UC San Diego ranks the sixth best university in terms of return on investment, as measured by the College Database. UCSD’s grads on average earn $48,400 out of college. Schools in the database with the best returns on investment have annual tuition rates below $20,000 with newly minted alums earning in excess of $40,000 per year. Till next week.
