About 600 employees will be laid off from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station as the nuclear power plant prepares to shut down, Southern California Edison said.

The process of letting go the nonunion workers will take place over two months, the company said. An expected 1,100 workers will be laid off in total, and about 400 will remain to continue the safe shutdown of the plant.

The plant shut down its reactors in January 2012 after it found that there had been a small radiation leak in its steam generators.
