OnMyBlock Wins Top Prize At Pitchfest

The holidays came early for one of San Diego’s newest businesses, OnMyBlock.com. The startup, which bills itself as a digital service built by college students for college students, won San Diego Venture Group’s annual Pitchfest competition, beating Sorrento Valley’s Sonrgy.com and TrustEgg.com. OnMyBlock, which is developing a Web-based business to pair students looking for housing and landlords, won $25,000 in cash and other prizes. Sonrgy.com is pursuing the use of sound waves to attack cancer, while TrustEgg.com has developed an easy process to set up a trust fund for a child. The winner was chosen by the more than 350 who attended the dinner and used a mobile system to cast their votes. … Students from Patrick Henry High School near Lake Murray took top honors at Junior Achievement of San Diego County’s Titans of Industry Challenge earlier this month. The program, a virtual competition that tests students’ business acumen and wiles, featured 68 students from five schools: Crawford, Patrick Henry, Hilltop and Clairemont high schools, and La Jolla Country Day. Patrick Henry will compete in an international competition next summer. … San Diego-based GovX.com, the largest e-commerce shopping site devoted to the military and other government workers, is offering special pricing for the holidays, thanks to discounts offered by more than 200 vendors such as Nike and Adidas Outdoor. And that includes special discounts for the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30. … The county’s environmental services department is accepting applications for its 22nd Annual Waste Reduction & Recycling Awards. The paperwork is due Feb. 7. The agency helps local businesses set up recycling programs free of charge for a greener environment. Details are at sandiego.gov/esd. … And this last item of note: Mary Walshok, dean of the University of California, San Diego’s extension program, and historian Abraham Shragge have written “Invention & Reinvention: The Evolution of San Diego’s Innovation Economy.” The recently published book is a case study that looks at the region’s social, political and economic trends from 1870 through 2010. Starting with our turn-of-the-century founding fathers, such as E.W. Scripps, Ellen Browning Scripps, Alonzo Horton and John Spreckels, the city’s growth then was characterized by the military, especially during the period around World War II. The two believe San Diego’s growth in the second half of the 20th century was propelled in large part by the military’s appetite for new technologies, which led to the founding of UC San Diego in 1960. … Till next year.
