Kyocera Communications Inc., the San Diego-based unit of Japan-based Kyocera Corp., has released a new, high-end, waterproof smartphone through Verizon Wireless.

Though many smartphones meet their end with an inadvertent dip in the water, the builder says its Hydro Elite model can sit in 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes without harmful effect. It can also stand up to blowing rain.

Verizon is selling the phone for $99.99 after a $50 rebate, provided the customer signs a two-year agreement.

Spokesman Brad Shewmake said Verizon has not offered a Kyocera phone for a while.
