Lightpointe, a San Diego maker of equipment used in wireless networks, said it signed a sales agreement with GCI Science and Technology Co. Ltd., a Chinese public company that was formerly a part of the China Ministry of Information Industry.
Lightpointe said GCI has committed to buy and distribute the company’s wireless bridges and backhaul radios in China. The company didn’t disclose any details about the contract.
Lightpointe’s equipment is designed for enterprise building connectivity and wireless 4G carriers in their small cell backhaul infrastructure.
Lightpointe’s majority owner is Berg & Berg Enterprises LLC, the $550 million venture fund of Silicon Valley billionaire Carl Berg.
According to a consultant Adlane Fellah of Maravedis Research, cited by Lightpointe, the point-to-point backhaul market is expected to reach $7 billion within the next five years, riding a wave of small cell build-outs.
